Do I Need Multiple Silencers, or Is One Enough?

Do you really need two silencers, or is one sufficient? Many hunters face the choice between optimizing a rifle for one specific type of hunting or building a more flexible setup that adapts to different needs, conditions, and preferences. The answer is simpler than it seems, but first, it’s important to understand that the question isn’t always about how many silencers you own, but how the system behind the suppressor is built.

With Stalon’s X-series, the possibilities for flexibility have completely changed. The system is built around interchangeable parts, giving you the ability to tailor length, weight, balance, and sound reduction to different hunting situations — without owning multiple complete suppressors. The same applies to the VR-series, which includes both a traditional front and a Venti front optimized for semi-automatic rifles. A flexible system is a major advantage for hunters who want to adjust and fine-tune their equipment to match their specific needs.

ONE SYSTEM – MANY SOLUTIONS

The modular construction is designed to reduce the need for several silencers. In practice, this means you can have one back-end matched to your thread and then switch fronts depending on whether you prioritize maneuverability, maximum performance, or easy caliber changes. This also makes it possible to “own multiple suppressors” without actually storing more than one complete unit. In some countries, silencers require a license, but the individual parts do not. The interchangeable front system effectively gives you several suppressors, even though only one complete silencer sits in your gun safe.

Regulations vary internationally - always check what applies in your country.

PROS AND CONS OF OWNING MULTIPLE SUPPRESSORS

To fully answer the question, it helps to look at both sides. Having multiple silencers can be convenient if you have different thread types or several calibers. One advantage is that you don’t need to move a suppressor between rifles; each can have its own dedicated setup. After cleaning, you can even store the silencer on the firearm, ensuring it’s always ready. You also avoid re-zeroing if your setup stays the same. The disadvantage of having several suppressors is the increased risk of mixing them up, which can lead to serious problems. Always double-check that you have the correct silencer, front, and back-end before heading out.

WEIGHT, LENGTH & BALANCE – WHY DIFFERENT FRONTS MATTER

When people ask whether they need two silencers, the question often comes down to rifle handling. The difference between the Front 108 and Front 149 has a clear impact on balance. A shorter suppressor provides a lighter, more agile rifle, ideal for driven hunting, dog handlers, or hunters who move a lot and prioritize a compact setup. A longer suppressor provides maximum sound reduction, recoil control, and a steadier sight picture at longer distances, making it excellent for stand hunting. Still, the choice of front is highly personal. Even if you hunt driven game, you can absolutely choose a 149 front if you don’t mind a slightly heavier setup.

CALIBER

The back-end determines the thread, while the front determines the caliber. A front marked max cal. .30 works for anything up to 7.62 mm, while a front marked 6.5 is optimized for smaller calibers. This means you can have a back-end in M14x1 and switch between a 6.5x55 front for mobile hunting and a .30 front for stand hunting. A smart combination of fronts effectively replaces several complete suppressors.

SO – DO YOU NEED TWO SUPPRESSORS?

The answer to this fairly complex question is no. With Stalon’s modular system, two or more complete silencers are rarely necessary. A hunter who previously bought one suppressor for stand hunting and another for driven hunts can now achieve the same flexibility simply by switching the front. However, if you want absolutely minimal transition time between multiple rifles, having several complete suppressors may still be practical. Most hunters would still say that what you truly need is a thoughtful silencer system; one that can become exactly what you need, when you need it.
