HOW LONG SHOULD A SILENCER LAST?
One of the most common questions we hear is how long a silencer actually lasts. Some shooters believe a suppressor wears out quickly, while others think it will last forever. The truth is somewhere in between. The lifespan of a silencer depends on how it is used, what calibers it is exposed to, and how it’s designed from the start.
We have seen silencers that have fired well over 20,000 rounds and still perform as intended. When talking about silencer lifespan, wear is mainly caused by pressure, heat, and gas flow; not the bullet itself. Larger calibers, short barrels, fast shooting, and poor maintenance all increase the load on the suppressor. How the silencer is used and how it is maintained will often have a bigger impact than the total number of shots fired.

NORMAL HUNTING USE VS HEAVY PRACTICE SHOOTING
In normal hunting situations, wear is relatively low. Most hunters fire only a few shots, and the silencerr has time to cool down between shots. In this type of use, a silencer can last for a lifetime without any loss of performance.
The situation can look different during intensive shooting at the range, where many rounds are fired in a short time and the silencer gets very hot. Heat is one of the main factors that affects the lifespan of any silencer. However, a well-built suppressor should be able to handle normal training without any problems.
PRACTICE SHOOTING, CINEMAS AND MELTING POINTS
Stalon silencers are designed to manage heat buildup well, even during extended shooting sessions. They are regularly used for practice shooting and have also been widely used in shooting cinemas, where the round count can be very high. When those moderators have eventually been replaced, it’s not been because they were damaged, but because they became heavy from powder residue after long use.
The barrel support has a melting point of around 180 degrees, and it can easily be removed when shooting large volumes, for example during range training. However, the silencer needs to cool down if it starts approaching 250 degrees. A melted barrel support is a clear indication that the temperature has been too high.
In reality, it is extremely difficult to shoot out a Stalon silencer from normal use. If a silencer would ever fail due to excessive heat or too many rounds, the barrel would most likely be damaged first. That is why durability is not only about how many shots you fire, but about how the suppressor is designed to handle real conditions.
CALIBER, BARREL LENGTH AND PRESSURE
Caliber also plays a major role in silencer wear. Magnum calibers and short barrels create higher gas pressure inside the suppressor, which means more stress for every shot. This does not mean you cannot use a silencer with powerful calibers, but it does mean the silencer must be designed to handle that level of load.
A suppressor that works perfectly with a standard hunting caliber may have a shorter lifespan if it is used with higher pressure cartridges or very short barrels. This is why durability is not only about the number of rounds fired, but about the conditions the silencer is used under.
CAN YOU SHOOT UNLIMITED ROUNDS WITH A SILENCER?
A common question is whether you can shoot as much as you want with a silencer. In practice, modern suppressors are built to handle far more shooting than most hunters will ever do, but no silencer is completely immune to wear.
What matters most is not the total round count, but the combination of heat, pressure, and shooting tempo. Firing many rounds quickly will always be harder on a moderator than firing the same number of rounds over a longer period of time.
But 20,000 rounds and the silencer still works as intended shows what is possible when the construction, materials, and design are made for use; not only for controlled testing.
