How Much Does a Silencer Reduce Sound and Recoil?

How much does a silencer actually reduce in terms of sound reduction and recoil control? It’s one of the most common questions we get.

At Stalon, our goal is to achieve around 30 dB of sound reduction with a modern silencer. Ten years ago, 20–25 dB was widely considered sufficient. Today, both expectations and engineering standards have evolved. Around 30 dB represents a strong balance between effective noise reduction and practical use.

For comparison, a properly fitted pair of earmuffs typically provides 20–25 dB of noise reduction, and that requires a perfect seal without interference from caps or glasses. A well-designed suppressor can match or exceed that reduction directly at the source of the shot. However, real-world conditions always matter. Sound reflections, terrain, and surroundings influence the total perceived noise. Shooting with a silencer is significantly better than shooting without one, but it does not eliminate all risk. Responsible hearing protection and awareness are still important.

Beyond sound suppression, recoil reduction is a major performance benefit. A silencer can reduce felt recoil by approximately 40–50%. That is a substantial difference.

This is not about being sensitive to recoil; it’s about control. Heavy recoil affects rifle stability, sight picture, and follow-up shots. From the moment you pull the trigger until the recoil impulse is complete, a lot happens mechanically. Reducing that force improves overall shooting comfort, control, and consistency.

It is possible to push sound reduction close to 40 dB, but that typically requires a larger, heavier suppressor. Increased size can negatively affect rifle balance and field usability. Our largest silencer that reduces nearly 40 dBc is Stalon XE149. Still, it only extends 149 mm over barrel.

That’s why we focus on optimizing performance per size and weight. The goal is not simply maximum decibel reduction, but achieving the best balance between sound reduction, recoil reduction, and practical handling in real hunting conditions.

In short, a modern silencer delivers significant benefits – both in sound reduction and recoil control – when designed with real-world use in mind.
