Lead-Free Ammunition and Silencers: What Every Hunter Needs to Know

Lead-free ammunition is no longer a distant regulation; it is arriving fast, and hunters across Europe are asking the same question: will this change how my moderator performs?

The short answer is: not really. But let us explain exactly why, and what you should be thinking about instead.

A traditional lead-core bullet consists of a lead core wrapped in a copper jacket. A lead-free bullet replaces that core with copper, a copper alloy, or a polymer tip — but the outer copper jacket remains largely the same.

This distinction matters more than most people realise. The part of the bullet that physically interacts with your silencer is the copper jacket, and that does not change between lead and lead-free ammunition.

Copper particles

No difference.

Both bullet types share a copper jacket — the part that contacts your silencer.

Powder types

Minor variation.

Some powders run hotter — but this applies to all ammo, not just lead-free.

Silencer choice

Unchanged.

Choose by balance, weight and length. Ammo type does not factor in.

The switch to lead-free has negligible impact on silencer (moderator) performance.

Both bullet types share a copper jacket — the part that enters the silencer.

Focus on balance, weight and length when selecting your silencer (moderator).

Some hunters worry that lead-free ammunition uses different propellants that could be more aggressive or run hotter inside a silencer. This concern is not entirely unfounded, since some powder formulations do burn slightly hotter than others.

However, this variation exists across all ammunition types, not just lead-free. Manufacturers continuously update powder formulations in both lead-core and lead-free loads. Your moderator is already designed to handle this range of temperatures.

When choosing a silencer, the key factors remain unchanged:

Balance — how does the moderator affect the handling of your rifle?

Length — a shorter silencer is more practical in dense woodland and tight blinds.

Weight — total carry weight matters on long days in the field.

Lead-free or not, these are the criteria that make a silencer right for you and your hunting style.

Lead-free ammunition is being phased in across Europe as part of broader efforts to reduce environmental contamination from hunting. The UK’s transition is already underway, with a voluntary phase-out moving toward full adoption.

For hunters, this means it is time to get accurate information – not alarm. The equipment you rely on will continue to perform.

At Stalon, we have been building silencers for European hunters for over 20 years. Our product range is designed to perform across all calibers and ammunition types, including the new generation of lead-free loads. If you have questions about choosing the right moderator for your rifle, we are here to help.
