The 8×57 JS — 8×57 IS in Germany, 8mm Mauser in much of the rest of the world — is one of the oldest hunting cartridges in Europe still in daily use, and it has never stopped being a driven-hunt cartridge: wild boar, red deer, moose. It sends a heavier bullet than a .308 Winchester down a wider bore, with more gas and more muzzle blast behind it. Handling and recoil matter more here than the last decibel does.

Every X-series silencer is a front and a back part. The front is what sits in front of the muzzle, and it is the same length on every model that carries it — a 108 is 108 millimetres whether it sits on an XS, an X or an XE. What changes is the telescopic back part that sits over the barrel: how much of the silencer you get back without making the rifle longer.
The front piece can be swapped later, so the same back part can go from a 108 to a 149 without changing the rifle. The muzzle thread sits in the back-end — your dealer matches that to your rifle.
On a driven hunt the rifle has to come up fast and stay balanced, and that is what the 108 front is for. The Stalon X108 reaches 108 mm in front of the barrel with the standard X back part behind it. The XS108 is the same front with the shortest back part — 45 mm shorter overall and 47 grams lighter — and between the two the choice is handling rather than performance.
If you want the most sound and recoil reduction you can still carry on a drive, the Stalon X149 is the one we point at: the longer 149 front with the standard back part, at 282.5 mm and 400 grams. It reaches further in front of the muzzle than a 108 does, and that is what you trade for the extra reduction.
From a high seat, length and weight stop deciding and sound and recoil start. The short pair still works — the X108 or the XS108 if you want a compact rifle in the seat, and plenty of hunters use the same silencer for both forms — but this is where a 149 front earns its length.
For maximum sound and recoil reduction we recommend the Stalon XS149 or the XE149. They share the 149 front and differ in the back part over the barrel: the XS149 is the shorter of the two at 237.5 mm, the XE149 is the longest silencer in the range at 317.5 mm and the most efficient. A Stalon silencer reduces recoil by 40–50 %, which is what makes a cartridge of this size comfortable to shoot for a whole evening.
A semi-automatic is a different problem from a bolt action, because the gas a silencer holds back has somewhere else to go. The Venti models solve it by construction: they lead the excess gas forward instead of back into the action.
